It’s finally here! Velo 21’s Purple Gain Speed Wax. Over 3 years in development to give you the Smoothest, Cleanest, and Fastest Drive Train Ever!

Top Benefits of Dip Waxing your Chain:

    • Drivetrain runs incredibly smooth
    • Chain stays very clean. You can rub your fingers on the chain and there is NO oily residue
    • Proven to save you some all-important Watts (over oil and wax-based drip on lubes)
    • Proven to make the chain last longer (over 4x longer over oil-based lube)
    • Suitable for Wet and Dry weather riding

So how does it make the chain last longer?

Oil-based lubes attract dirt to the chain. The chain goes black as dirt is attracted to the oil. The fine bits of dirt create a cutting paste in the chain which then wear down the pins & plates of the chain. This is what causing the chain to “stretch” (the chain becomes elongated due to grooves being worn in from the oily cutting paste).

Wax dipping your chain does not attract dirt like oil-based lubes and so you therefore do not get the wear to the chain and the “stretch”. Your chain performs better, making the ride much smoother and lasts 4 x longer than if using an oil-based lube.

    How to apply:

Step 1 – Clean the Chain

Firstly, and most importantly you must clean the chain. You need to get rid of all the lubricant that is on the chain. Even a brand-new chain is covered in grease to stop corrosion, and this must be removed for the Wax to cling to the chain properly. You should wax your chain from new. You can wax your existing chain, but we do recommend that it is below the 0.5 of wear.

Step 2 – Melting the Wax

You can either use a saucepan or slow cooker. Apply a low heat and slowly melt the wax (the melting point of the wax is about 58 degrees Celsius) Do NOT let the wax boil.

Step 3 – Dipping the Chain

Thread the chain onto the piece of wire supplied with the wax, then twist the wire to make a loop (this is so you can hang it out to dry). Dip the chain into the wax completely submerging the chain, then agitate the chain in the wax, swishing the pan or pot around to make sure that the wax is getting into the chain. Leave the chain in for 5 minutes (the wax needs to still be a liquid at this point so make sure its still on the heat) and then after the 5 mins, turn the chain over and repeat this process. After the 10 mins total remove the chain from the wax.

Step 4 – Drying the Chain

Hang the chain with the wire provided over the pot you have melted the wax in, as any drips will then be saved. Lightly wipe of the excess wax from the outside of the chain with a clean dry cloth (if you are riding a mountain bike, cross bike, or riding in bad weather you may want to leave this process as the extra wax will protect the chain from the elements). Leave the chain to dry. This will take about 30 mins and the chain will go solid.

Step 5 – Loosening the Chain

Once the chain has set you need to loosen it up before fitting to the bike. Unhook from the wire and hang over something you can pull the chain backwards and forwards over, for example, a door handle. As you do this the chain will start to move more freely. After a couple of minutes or so the chain will be ready to fit to the bike. It will still feel a little stiff but after 5 minutes of riding, the chain will be running at its most efficient.

Once you have waxed the chain you can rewax the chain again with no deep clean like the first time.  No need to remove the old wax just re dip it. We do recommend however just removing any visible dirt from the chain by giving it a wipe over. If you do want to fully clean the chain and remove the wax already on, all you need to do is soak it in boiling water as the heat will melt the wax. If you have ridden in bad weather just give the chain a quick wipe to remove the moisture as this could cause rust spots.

Happy riding and enjoy your freshly waxed drive train!
